From Library Journal Early in this century "democratic social engineering" utilized techniques for the control of groups that masked authoritarian ends with democratic means. Graebner argues that the device became central to American life, citing church groups, advertising, YMCAs, the United Nations, presidential addresses, Dr. Spock, Dale Carnegie, and much else. But in trying to explain too much, he explains little. His book fails to make a convincing case for either the commonality of such a list or for the insidiousness he discerns.
