Reader Reviews
I purchased this book expecting to learn the ins and outs of GM fuel injection, including explanations of VE and spark tables, accel enrichment, decel fuel cutoff, power enrichment mode, etc. "How to Tune & Modify" implies directions for modding these tables; it's the only way to tune a GM fuel injection system! Instead, Watson spends over 2/3rds of the book explaining how to troubleshoot (isn't that what repair manuals are for?!) and perform a standard tune-up! Tune-up is not the same as tuning! Watson's "modifications" are straight off ebay and the web forums less technically inclined individuals hang out on to discuss mods. Watson recommends doing things like fooling the coolant temperature sensor to increase spark advance, turning up fuel pressure to increase power (complete with an arbitrary and completely unrealistic graph of unitless "Power" vs "Fuel Pressure") and recommends dangerous procedures like disconnecting the oxygen sensor when extensive mods are made. Again, Watson does NOT EXPLAIN HOW TO TUNE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEMS. There is no mention of PROM writers, how to tune VE tables, etc. Watson assumes a budget of $5, a handful of resistors from radioshack, and an anemic TPI motor. I wish there was some other book I could recommend, but I have yet to find a good book (available from regular booksellers) on this topic. Try to find a GM-published Fuel Injection manual if at all possible.
