Introduction to Environmental Engineering
Product Description This text has two unifying themes: materials balances and environmental ethics. First, the book demonstrates that environmental problems need to be solved using a holistic approach instead of a fragmented, single-pollution or single-medium approach. By using the concepts of materials balances, reactions, and reactors, the authors integrate and unify the presentation of water supply, waste-water treatment, air pollution control, and solid and hazardous waste management. Second, since ethics plays an increasingly important part in the professional lives of engineers, the authors incorporate ethical decision making into the discussions and problems. In many of the problems, students are required not only to solve the technical part, but also to consider the ethical ramifications of solving the technical problems. About The Author P. Aarne Vesilind is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and R.L. Rooke Chair in the Historical and Societal Context of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bucknell University. Before joining Bucknell, he was a Professor at Duke University from 1970 to 1999. At Bucknell, Dr. Vesilind's teaching specialties are environmental engineering, professional ethics, engineering communications, sludge treatment and disposal, design of water and wastewater treatment plants, air pollution control, and solid waste engineering. His research interests include wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and professional ethics. Dr. Vesilind is also the co-author of Vesilind/Worrell/Reinhart, SOLID WASTE ENGINEERING (Brooks/Cole 2002). Susan M. Morgan, P.E. is Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Civil Engineering at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Dr. Morgan's teaching specialty is environmental engineering, particularly hazardous and solid waste management. Her research interests include pollution prevention, sustainable design, and stormwater management. She received the National Young Engineer of the Year Award from the National Society of Professional Engineers in 2001.
