When I was a lad, back when RAM was measured in kilobytes and dinosaurs roamed the earth, Computer Shopper was among the best (of few) sources of information for prospective buyers of computer components. Some of my colleagues referred to it as "the yellow pages" both because of its physical characteristics and its content: few reviews, fewer articles, and about 1000 pages of advertisements and dealer info. Two decades later, there has been little change... but all of it for the better. Now that we live in the Internet age, a few hundred excess pages have been trimmed down to URLs, leaving more room for actual content. While Computer Shopper still averages fewer articles and editorials than other PC magazines, every issue is filled with page after page of excellent reviews, giving readers accurate details on new products instead of hollow benchmark scores. Additionally, each issue contains the Web Buyer directory, a listing and brief critique of the web sites of nearly one hundred reputable vendors. To sum up, if you're the sort of person who buys computer parts weekly, then you can not live without a subscription to this magazine. But even if you only purchase new equipment once or twice a year, you'll want to have a copy of Computer Shopper nearby... at this price, you might as well subscribe! Comment | | (Report this)
