Reader Reviews
"Computer" magazine is one of the best reasons for joining the IEEE Computer Society. It's a monthly update on what's happening across the field of computing, in technology, law, education, industry, and society. It offers varied articles and columns on standards, the profession, and lots more, all in language accessible to any computing professional. Monthly columns include the last-page opinion piece - always thought provoking, whether you agree or not. There are reviews of recent books and products, too. Also, to keep perspective on our fast-changing profession, and with a nod to Scientific American, the "16 and 32 years ago" column reproduces one-paragraph extracts from back issues. (32 years ago, computer animation was the cool and coming thing, and 16 years ago "SDI [could] only be called reliable by tampering with the very notion of reliability".) The magazine is part of a Computer Society membership, which is a good idea for anyone who takes their profession seriously. Yes, this is an IEEE magazine, but you don't have to be an EE to appreciate it or the other IEEE services to people active in the computing world. The cost of membership is actually quite modest - LOTS less than the nominal retail price quoted here - and the easiest way to stay at the top of your field. //wiredweird
